This Castel is located in a top of an isolated hill at an altitude 88m (288 foot -/+). From the castle, you can view the picturesque village of Aljezur and all the natural scenery around such as the riverbank known as “Ribeira de Aljezur” and the plain.
Its construction is situated in the 10th century during the Islamic occupation. It’s presumed the village foundation happened in the same period. This fortress was part of the defensive system of the area under the domain of Silves califate (During the Islamic medieval period). The Christian order of Santiago “Ordem de Santiago” also known as Order of St. James of the Sword military forces liberate and re-conquered the area around 1242 – 1246.
