Paderne Castle

Paderne Castel was erected during the Muslim occupation of the Algarve. Dated to the second half of the XII century, this monument was built using a millennial technique called “ Taipa militar”  based on the use of soil, inerts and aerial lime compacted between wood collars. Archaeological evidence shows the existence of a typical Islamic housing conglomerate.

After the conquest of the region, by the Christian forces, the castle was taken by the new settlers and  Christian population occupied its premisses.

This monument was then adapted to serve Christian faith and a worship temple built in honour of Nossa Senhora da Assunção (Virgin Mary ) was installed. Since that occurrence, the castle and involving area received mainly a religious significance being used as the parish for the area and visited mostly for pilgrimages until the  XVI century when was deliberately abandoned in favour of a new church.
