Roman Ruins Vilamoura

The Roman Ruins archaeological site in Vilamoura is located in Cerro da Vila ( short walking distance from Vilamoura marina).

The site is a testimony of the ancient occupation of this area at different times since the neolithic era. Over the centuries attractive factors emerging from the deep connection with the sea and maritime resources plus its favourable harbour and central position in Algarve propitiated economic activity and settlements. Under the Roman Empire heyday, this area seems to benefit from notable prosperity attested by the reminiscences of mosaics, frescoes painting, spouts, gardens and a Cryptoporticus that leads to private and public baths and other important constructions such as a cemetery (necropolis) and some industrial areas dedicated to the production of fish derivates. Several artefacts attesting Roman settlement have been found after excavations.
